Social Media Marketing Explained

The social media marketing area has exploded in recent times with all kinds of claims being made and if we were to believe them all, Telesales, Direct mail, Networking , Advertising and other traditional forms of media would all be seen to be outdated and irrelevant. So what can you really believe and what actually works?

The biggest issue we see with Social Media is that because it is typically carried out by the business owner, the time input does not have a cash value. For this reason (and especially in times where cost savings are at the top of the agenda), we believe the information to be slightly skewed. However, done properly, Social Media Marketing can be a very effective way to generate new awareness, interest and profitable business.

The activities that fall under social media marketing include; Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, E-cademy, blogging etc. The general principle being that you hold conversations with your audience rather than just putting out a message. This is the part that many social media users miss. By missing this part, they are failing to make any headway with Social Media Marketing and therefore the activity becomes an unmeasured waste of time and resource. Importantly, each site should be viewed individually. However, there are many tools that allow you to update all of your online profiles simultaneously such as Tweetdeck.

By far, the most effective social media application for business is LinkedIn but once again, simply having a profile page is not enough. Adding posts regularly is better, but still not enough. The real power in LinkedIn is the connections that you have, the recommendations that they give you and the connections that they have. Who do you provide a really high value service to? Search for that type of person. Who do you know who is connected to that person? Will they introduce you?

It is vitally important that you are active in LinkedIn groups. A widely documented fact is that a prospect will on average have 7 ‘touch points’ with you before doing business and more recently, this has been suggested to be 7 hours?!  It is quite incredible how many relationships you can forge that will pay back at the point of sale. At Urban Media, we generate a lot of business through Linkedin by adding value to relationships and we can show you how to achieve this.

Twitter is a current buzzword, but be very careful. There is a huge divide between those who have genuinely generated a return on investment from their time input and those that have not. If you are going to use Twitter, you have to be disciplined and allow a set time each day rather than keeping Twitter open all day and  distracting you from other more important issues. Measure the time, cost it and then measure the results and judge if the ‘budget’ has been well spent and the return on your time and effort has been worthwhile We are not against Twitter and as a team, we do our fair share of ‘tweeting’, but be clear about your objectives and measure them. Value your time and effort and consider the ‘opportunity cost’ and the potential returns  you could have generated if you had invested the money that you decided your time and effort time spent was worth, with Urban Media.

We believe that Facebook is about you, not your business. It provides fantastic opportunities for advertising, but make sure that you ‘post’ updates and create groups for ‘interest ’and not simply to sell your wares! At Urban Media, we organise a charity rally each year and this Facebook group is very popular and has a great following that includes some of our clients. As a result, they see our branding and can link to our site. However, this is not the same as having an Urban Media fan site which would  frankly be an abuse of someone’s home space, but it does ensure that we are present at all times. How could you be creative in this area? The key point is that it is not wrong to create a group, but ask yourself why a Facebook user would want to join (other than because you have asked them to).

So, in simple terms, Social Media Marketing provides a fantastic opportunity to promote your business and you as an individual. It is an area that you will have to have a big input into and your time should be valued and budgeted as if you were outsourcing this work. Monitor your time and stick to the discipline of a set time period to carry out all of your updates and with the right help from your internet marketer, you could find Social Media Marketing is a very profitable online marketing method.

However, if you find out through measuring that this is not the case, do not fall into the trap and blindly continue simply because social media marketing is the current buzzword.

Urban Media run regular seminars in which we simplify search engine marketing including Social Media. We show delegates how to measure the effectiveness of their online marketing. To book on one of these, please call to discuss on 01494 538441.
