Facebook's 'People Talking About' Metric

Posted - 07 October 2011 by Jake Jones

A couple of months ago, Facebook launched its version of page tracking called insights. Users could now view a wealth of information about their fan-pages such as page views, likes and impressions in the form of some lovely graphs and pleasing statistics.

Their latest addition to Insights is their 'People are Talking About This' metric. The tool allows users to get an Idea of not only how many people have seen their post, but how many have actually talked about it too. The applications of this information are huge. Owners of fan-pages can now see first hand how engaged their customers are in their new products - Bailey's, for example, who recently launched a Biscotti flavour of their popular liquor, can now see just how much of a stir their biscuit based beverage caused amongst the social media community. Businesses will be able to tailor their updates based on how much people talk about and share their posts and will start honing in on the most effective methods of interacting with their customers.

It's recently been predicted that come 2015, 15% of purchases made will be through 'social-commerce', and with market research tools this effective being made readily available to businesses, it's easy to see why.
